- Description: A medium apple, a medium banana and a cup of grapes carry almost the same carbohydrate. On the monitor, one raised my blood sugar twice as much as another.

| My sister banned fruit. Not all food. Just fruit. She read something online about sugar and decided her kids were better off without it. She is not the only one. A pediatrician in Maryland, Dr. Christina Brown, went on the local news a couple of weeks ago to push back on exactly this. Her line was simple: "I think there's a lot of misinformation out there." The real problem, she said, runs the other way. About one in three children between one and five does not eat fruit every day. So I want to settle something today. Fruit is not the enemy. But not every fruit treats you the same way, and I wanted to see how big that gap gets. So I tested three of them on three separate mornings. Empty stomach, nothing else with them, same time of day, glucose monitor on my arm. And I weighed them first, so this would be a fair fight… 🍎 Apple 1 medium, 182 g 27 g carbs 🍌 Banana 1 medium, 118 g peeled 27 g carbs 🍇 Grapes 1 cup, 151 g 26 g carbs Same carbohydrate in all three. So they should all do about the same thing to my blood sugar. That is the guess, anyway. Your turn Which one raised my blood sugar the most? Pick yours before you scroll. 🍎 The apple 🍌 The banana 🍇 The cup of grapes Got one? Keep going. ↓ The answer The grapes. A cup of grapes raised my blood sugar 66 points. The banana raised it 52. The apple raised it 31\. That is less than half what the grapes did, off the same amount of carbohydrate. I would have picked the banana. Bananas have the reputation. They are the fruit people cut first. But the banana came second. Here are all three on the monitor… ![Glucose chart comparing a cup of grapes, a medium banana and a medium apple, all with the same carbohydrate. Grapes raised blood sugar 66 points, the banana 52 and the apple 31.](REPLACE_WITH_CHART_URL) This is one person's experiment, not medical advice. Everyone's body responds differently. The scoreboard 🍇 1 cup of grapes +66 1.4 g of fiber 🍌 1 medium banana +52 2.0 g of fiber 🍎 1 medium apple +31 3.8 g of fiber Why the apple won Look at the fiber column again. The apple carried 3.8 grams. The grapes carried 1.4. In other words, the apple brought almost three times the fiber for the same sugar. Fiber slows down how fast your body absorbs the sugar it came with. Less fiber, faster absorption, bigger rise. That is the whole mechanism. A study published last year in the journal Foods put real numbers on this. The researchers compared a long list of fruits and found that a fruit's ratio of carbohydrate to fiber tracked its effect on blood sugar more closely than its glucose content did. Run that ratio on my three and the order falls out before you eat anything. The apple carries about 7 grams of carbohydrate for every gram of fiber. The banana, about 13\. The grapes, about 19. It lines up with the chart almost exactly. There is a second thing about grapes, and it has nothing to do with chemistry. You eat them one at a time, standing at the counter, while you do something else. Nobody eats four bananas by accident. A cup of grapes can empty while I am reading something on my phone. "The apple brought almost three times the fiber for the same sugar. That was the whole difference." If you love grapes You do not have to give them up. I still eat them. I just stopped eating them the way I used to… **Put them in a bowl first.**Eating straight from the bag is how a cup turns into three. A bowl makes you decide how much you want before you start. **Eat them with protein or fat.**A few nuts or a piece of cheese alongside the grapes slows the whole thing down. The grapes stop arriving on their own. **Have them after a meal, not instead of one.**Grapes on an empty stomach is the hardest version of this test. After a real meal, there is already food slowing things down. And if you are picking fruit for a child whose parent is nervous about sugar, the apple is a good place to point. One more thing. I do not know if your body would rank these three the same way mine did. The research on how differently people respond to the same food is still young, and my own numbers might shift next month with a different bunch of grapes. What I would bet on is the direction, not the exact number. Tomorrow I am eating the same banana twice. Once on its own, once with a spoonful of peanut butter. The second one barely looked like the same fruit. — Stay steady |
